When Grief Feels Wasted

When Grief Feels Wasted

“You keep track of all my sorrows—You have collected all my tears in your bottle—You have recorded each one in your book” (Psalm 56:8-NLT).

There’s something deeply comforting—and almost mysterious—about this verse.

God doesn’t just see our pain. He keeps it.

Every tear you’ve cried in the dark… every moment of grief no one else noticed… every silent ache you didn’t have words for—He has not overlooked a single one. Scripture says He has collected them, recorded them, and kept track of them all.

I’ve often wondered—what does He do with those tears?

We’re told to “move through grief,” not around it. But if we’re honest, grief can feel pointless. It’s uncomfortable. It slows us down. It doesn’t feel productive. Sometimes it even feels like wasted time.

But this verse tells a different story.

Grief Is Not Wasted

Your grief is not wasted. It is witnessed. It is remembered. And somehow, in the hands of God, it is redeemed.

Psalm 34:18 reminds us: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

He doesn’t stand at a distance while you grieve—He draws near. He sits with you in it. And not only that, but He also assigns its value. Every tear matters enough to be kept.

And if He keeps it, we can trust He will use it.

Scripture consistently shows us that God never wastes pain:

  • “We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God…” (Romans 8:28-NLT).
  • “Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy” (Psalm 126:5-NLT).

Tears are not the end of the story. They are seeds.

Seeds that, in time, produce healing. Compassion. Wisdom. Deeper intimacy with Him.

Sometimes grief feels like you’re falling apart. But in God’s hands, it’s often where something new is being formed.

So, if you’re in a season of sorrow right now, don’t rush past it. Don’t minimize it. And don’t. believe the lie that it’s meaningless.

God Sees Your Grief

He sees it. He keeps it. And He will bring something from it.

One day, the same God who collects your tears promises this: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes…” (Revelation 21:4-NLT).

The tears He holds now…He will one day remove forever.

Until then, you can trust this—Not one tear you’ve cried has been wasted.

Christian Freedom

Christian Freedom Christian freedom is a key theme in our Christian faith, but it is often misunderstood. From a biblical perspective, true freedom isn’t about having no limits or doing whatever we want. Instead, it is the ability to live as God designed—free from the bondage of sin, shame, fear, and death. In John 8:36,…

I teach a class in my marriage seminar entitled “Fun.” It deals explicitly with the topic of sex in marriage. Interestingly enough, it is the most favorite session taught. I get more positive feedback…

Pushing Buttons, Stirring Pots & Poking Bears

I was working with a couple and at some point, in the process, received a request from the husband. His…
