For Christmas 2021, I bought myself 3 Bibles. One of them is an ESV Readers Bible. It has six volumes and has no verse or chapter divisions. I have been reading it this year and am thoroughly enjoying it.
In Deuteronomy, Moses gave a history lesson to the people of Israel of their progression from Egypt to the door of the promised land. In 3:6, referencing their enemies, Moses states, “We devoted them to destruction.” I found that phrase intriguing.
Later, at the end of chapter 7, Moses says, “And you shall not bring an abominable thing into your house and become devoted to destruction like it. You shall utterly detest and abhor it, for it is devoted to destruction.”
This message is consistent throughout the Bible. This message is still relevant today.
What I find interesting is the phrase, “Devoted to Destruction.”
It is a good practice to periodically (at least once or twice a year) do an inventory of our life and home. Is anything present, as innocent or innocuous as it may seem, that has come between God and us? Is there anything in our life that is devoted to our destruction? We need to be proactive and devote ourselves to its destruction if there is.
Even more interesting with the phrase, “Devoted to Destruction,” is both ‘Devoted’ and ‘Destruction’ having the same Hebrew root word. The word refers to worship.
When we devote ourselves to the destruction of idols (things between God and us), we do so as worship to our God. It is essential to recognize those idols are devoted to our destruction as a form of worship to their god. Selah!
