Dealing with disappointment is an inevitable part of life. Whether it’s a prayer not answered in the way we hoped, a failed relationship, or an unfulfilled dream, we all experience moments of frustration and sorrow. As Christians, how we respond to disappointment can shape our faith and deepen our trust in God.
Acknowledge Your Feelings
Many believers struggle to express their disappointment, fearing it may show a lack of faith. However, biblical figures like David and Job openly lamented their hardships before God. Psalm 42:11 says, “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.“ God invites us to bring our burdens to Him honestly, knowing that He cares deeply for us (1 Peter 5:7).
Seek God’s Perspective
When disappointment strikes, it’s easy to focus on what went wrong rather than God’s sovereignty. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. What seems like a setback may be God redirecting us toward something better. Trusting in His wisdom helps us shift our perspective from despair to hope.
Remember God’s Faithfulness
Looking back at past experiences where God has provided, comforted, or redirected us can bring encouragement during times of disappointment. Lamentations 3:22-23 assures us, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning.” God’s faithfulness in the past is a promise for the future.
Wait on the Lord
Disappointment often arises when things don’t unfold according to our timeline. However, God’s timing is perfect. Psalm 27:14 encourages us: “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” When we surrender our disappointments to God, we allow Him to work all things together for good (Romans 8:28).
Find Strength in Christ
Ultimately, our hope should not rest in the circumstances but in Christ alone. Even when we face disappointment, we can take comfort in His unchanging love. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
When you are dealing with disappointment, turn to God and trust that His plans are greater than your own. We can overcome discouragement through faith, prayer, and perseverance and find peace in His perfect will.

The Power of Giving Thanks
Giving thanks. Being thankful. Seems like the same thing but there is a difference. One is proactive, the other reactive. Is either one wrong? Absolutely not! Both are right. Both are needed. Consider an obvious Scriptural example. Dr. Luke tells a true story of ten men, which he records in Luke 17:12-18. If we cheat…
Healing Hurts
Healing Hurts (Part 2 of 2) Most people would prefer a solution to their conflict, but since that requires ‘rocking the boat’ many learn to live with the conflict. Historians tell us the ‘Cold War’ ended in the 1980s. However, within the walls of many Christian marriages today, there is a cold war brewing. It’s…
