Spiritual Acid Rain

“Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are a good report; if there be any virtue, and if there any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. [Philippians 4:8}

Acid rain comes from the compounds given off by cars and factories needed to maintain our modern lifestyle. These compounds mix with fresh rain to create acids, which then fall into our lakes and upon our forests –killing many species of life. In fact some of the lakes in Eastern Canada are devoid of fish or other animal life. Just so in the spiritual realm we are seeing violence, pornography and obscenities falling upon the fresh minds of our children killing the spirit and warping their sense of right and wrong.

Former Vice President Dan Quayle was attacked for chiding the media for showing a program where Murphy Brown gave birth to a child born out of wedlock –as ‘normal’ and ‘just another lifestyle choice’. Our children are now seeing things on their ‘smart phones’, computers and television as normal. Things that would make adults blush thirty years ago.

Bing Crosby in his last interview before he died made the following warning and gave also a prophecy. He spoke out at what he saw as the coming destruction of our values in America –he blamed most of it upon the TV and movie industry.

“It became very apparent to me as we write and produce -that there is an increase in nudity, permissiveness, irresponsibility, profanity, scenes of explicit sex, provocative dialogue, smutty innuendo … I voiced my sentiment to a TV executive”, and he said, “We are only depicting life as it is.’ ”

“I fear”, said Crosby, “that they are depicting life as it is going to be if it is not diverted.”

Bing Crosby’s prediction has come true. What is sad is that it is not only bringing down our young people but also our family structure. Rarely do you see a young person today without their personal computer and television in the form of a cell phone in their hands where they can access all of the above sinful ‘entertainment’.

In responding to Mr Quayle’s speech the Oregonian wrote the following: “The breakdown of the traditional nuclear family is undisputed. The number of single parent households has doubled since 1970, from 12 percent to 25 percent according to Census figures.

The number of out-of-wedlock births also has increased dramatically. Nearly 20 percent of white single mothers had never been married in 1991, compared with 3 percent in 1970. Fifty-four percent of black single mothers had never been married in 1991, compared with 15 percent in 1970.” [5/22/1992] If the above erosion of values was true in 1992 — what about today?

Paul Harvey says it so well: “I am opposed to putting garbage on television for the same reason I would oppose open sewers in our streets. It could be argued that what is in these sewers is natural and normal. ‘Let it flow man –its just normal. Everybody does it and that it’s not really dirty!” But everywhere in the world where sewage flows unconfined it breeds disease -always!”

For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he …” [Prov. 23:7] The Bible states that we are what we think. Our children can only be as strong spiritually and morally as they are in their thought structure. There is a saying in the computer industry which says: “Garbage in – garbage out!”

If one feeds continually on a diet of sin and moral trash; do not be surprised: “If he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed. then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” [James 1:14,15]

Note: I printed much the same article ten years ago, but I feel led to print this warning again.

Some time ago I was…

Where Was Daddy Zebedee?

Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy…

Discipline That Provokes

“Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.” Colossians 3:20, 21 Last week, as I was getting a haircut, the subject came up about discipline—or the lack of it. My barber shared with us that she had…
